Do you think my grass needs cutting?

We have had a pleasant few days here in the south of England.
At this time of year the first few good days of sunshine give rise to the sound of neighbours mowing their prized lawns. Yesterday, whilst in the garden, i heard the familiar hum of a lawn mower to my right. This evening my neighbour to the left followed suit and both gardens are now sporting freshly cut lawns.

It got me thinking.....

Should i cut mine?

I kind of like the shagpile look of it at the moment. The forget-me-nots and the dandelions seem very happy with it too.

But the garden always feels bigger when i finally cut it.

What do you think? Leave it a bit or give it a haircut?

Have you cut yours yet?

I gave mine it's first trim of the season the other day, I love the smell of newly cut grass. But it also reminded me that even tho the lawn is small I don't really like mowing!

hi Jo,
freshly cut grass makes my nose tickle inside and it makes me feel like sneezing. i actually quite like strimming the edges though.

Hi Ginny - why not leave it just that little bit longer, till the garden feels claustrophobically small? That way when you do cut it it will feel as though you have re-invented the garden! xx

If you cut it you will feel that summer is finally here and you will be be inspired to rush around making up jugs of Pimms. Definitely a cut!

My lawn is a large field !
We have to cut it regularly to keep it looking good. I always feel better when it has been cut and I too love the smell of freshly cut grass. So I say cut it! ;-) Sal

Hi Ginny, we don't have any grass. Our neighbours keep the grass on their fronts very well manicured, and the lawns are always covered in starlings! My dad goes for the wild look, and at different times of the year he has different plants growing through, snowdrops, crocus, cowslips etc. A planned meadow garden, or just an excuse not to get the mower out? x

leave it a while - looks so green and lush - am quite envious actually...we have a tiny patch of almost bald moss for a lawn - I would love some of that lushness you've got

good luck with the move to home studio spaces btw

I would leave it, I'm fond of overgrown lawns. However my husband would definetly cut it, he has already cut ours.

Hello Ginny, I had no idea you were back posting again. Sorry for not coming over earlier. Congrats and happy blog birthday to you! Leaving the studio must have been very hard for you. We finally relented and cut the grass last week (by "we" I mean M!) but I love the way long grass looks with all the flowers growing up between it.

Oh yes, I always think that grass should be cut...bigger, neater...and best of all you can see if there are any frogs that you were about to step on...but I am not terribly earthy, so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask. x

Our garden is still so wet, infact very muddy in parts so we can not mow ours...but hey if it was not so wet I would as it looks so lovely once done and the garden starts to lose its drape winter look...Maybe you could leave a meadow square!!!

CUT IT!!!
My husband who is not renowned for his love of gardening has mown ours TWICE this year.
If you leave it much longer it will look terrible when you finally get round to doing it.

I love the look of a freshly cut lawn, but any lawn is good for me - I have no garden - natalie x

I love to walk barefoot through long grass..
I would be tempted to leave it a bit longer but this is coming from someone who no longer owns a lawn and I am v envious!!

You should cut your grass when you want to. Why do we cut our grass anyway?
